We provide learning opportunities for young people wishing to gain experience and/or qualifications with horses and riding. Currently we are offering NVQ 1 in Horse care as part of our collaboration with the Northern Racing College.
Please enquire about other opportunities/your requirements.
We offer work experience placements to students on equine and veterinary courses. The duration of the placement is open to negotiation on application. We pride ourselves in our flexibility and are open to most requests dependent on availability.
Throughout the placement, students will experience a real taste of the working environment as well as procedure observation and being able to work alongside our staff and other equine professionals.
The experience gained at NFS can form a vital and important part of equine and veterinary courses. Places can be in high demand so please do enquire in plenty of time.
My name is Laurie, I have just finished a two week placement at North Farm, and I have to say it was one of the best placements I've ever been on. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone I worked with, and, most importantly, I was given plenty of hands-on experience. I am very grateful for everyone who took time to show me or teach me anything new especially given the busy schedule you all have. If my schedule allows I will try to return next summer.
Thanks again to everyone I worked with... Regards, Laurie
During the summer of 2012 I began my work experience at North Farm Stud. I had never worked with race horses before so I was hoping to gain knowledge and experience in all areas of racehorse care and rehabilitation. My intentions were above and beyond what I expected and from the moment I arrived I was made extremely welcome by Grace and all members of staff. I was directly involved in the daily duties which took place on the yard and also had the opportunity to ride many of the horses on a frequent basis.
I was taught how to handle thoroughbreds correctly and safely and was given many opportunities to handle mares & foals. I believe that my handling skills improved since working at North Farm and I now feel much more confident than I did prior to working there. I was also able to work alongside their regular farrier, remedial massage therapist, chiropractor and veterinarian assisting with x-rays and a castration which was an extremely interesting experience. North Farm Stud is the home to where the charity HEROS operates and I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany Susan Jannaway, Grace’s assistant, in taking their ambassador horse MONSIGNOR to race meetings to raise money for the charity and meet the public. A particular highlight was being present at the Olympic torch parade at Ascot with champion jockey Frankie Detorri riding MONSIGNOR to carry the torch.
As well as working with retired race horses I also cared for many National Hunt race horses in training, which were on their summer break at North Farm Stud. Since working last year I have followed the form of each of these horses and will continue to do so in the future. North Farm Stud is a unique and special place which provides ultimate care and management of horses to the highest standard. I valued my time here greatly and due to this I have visited again out of university term time. The most recent visit I made I was fortunate enough to be able to assist with two mares foaling on the stud which was extremely rewarding.
The knowledge and experience Grace and her team have is second to none and I genuinely believe that my time here there and will be a memorable asset to me when working in the industry in the not so distant future.
